A lesson many of have have to learn is how to listen.
To often, we only listen so we can reply. When this happens you don’t fully absorb what is being said.
To truly listen, you have to focus on what is being said and not the thoughts it stirs.
One thing we should all do is listen as if the person talking knows something you don’t.
You should do this because it prompts you to consider what is being said rather than crafting a reply.
So many times I’ve found that people just need someone to listen. Not someone to reply.
There are even times when we are so focused on our reply that we will actually interrupt the person speaking. This is a clear sign that you are not listening. Or if this happens to you, you can be assured that the person is not really listening to you.
Often, when a friend or loved one is sharing something with us, we just need to listen.
Have you ever found yourself in a situation where a serious pain is shared, like a loss or something traumatic, and you don’t know what to say, or anything you say won’t help?
This is exactly when you should be really listening. Just let the person know you hear them. Often, this is all they really need.
If you enjoy helping others, try listening more deeply. You will also find that you learn a lot more and remember more clearly. They will really appreciate it too.
Listen… do you hear it now?
I hope this post inspires you to listen more deeply.
